Oil Sands Bird Contact Monitoring Plans: 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015

Description

These plans outline the objectives and methods for the regionally coordinated monitoring of bird contacts with and mortalities at process-affected ponds at the 5 operating oil sands mines (Shell Canada Energy Ltd., Canadian Natural Resources Limited, Imperial Oil, Suncor Energy Inc., and Syncrude Canada Ltd.) in Alberta. Each plan in this series is an update to the previous year's plan and applies only to that monitoring season. The regional coordination of on-site monitoring was initiated in 2011 to determine the number of birds coming in contact with and dying on the process-affected water ponds. The program is a collaborative effort from industry, government and academia. Participation in this program addresses the tailings pond monitoring requirements outlined in each operator's EPEA approval.
