Total Area of the Oil Sands Tailings Ponds over Time

Description

This item is a table and graph of the area of the Alberta oil sands mine tailings ponds from 1985 to 2020. (The Alberta in situ projects do not require tailings ponds.)

Note that some of the mines have not been active during this entire period.

The categories presented on this graph include:

1. Total Tailings Pond Water Area - This is also sometimes referred to as the wet tailings surface area.

2. Total Active Tailings Area (including all structures such as dikes, beaches, dedicated drying areas and the water area).

Note that the Total Active Tailings Area includes the Total Tailings Pond Water Area.

The data from all included years except 2008 and 2009 are based on the reports of the oil sands mine operators annually to Alberta Environment and Sustainable Resource Development and to the Alberta Energy Regulator. The data from 2008 and 2009 are estimates.
