Total Volume of the Oil Sands Tailings Ponds over Time

Description

This item is a table and graph of the volume of the fine fluid tailings in all of the Alberta oil sands mine tailings ponds from 1968 to the end of 2013. "Fine tailings", "fine fluid tailings" or "FFT" is the liquid in the tailings ponds; it consists of water with very small particles of suspended clay that were produced by the mining extraction process.

Note that some of the oil sands mines have not been active during the entire period for which data is provided here.

This information will be updated annually as the operators submit the data to the Alberta Energy Regulator, which compiles it and provides it to AEMERA.
